DLF City Centre, Gurgaon
DLF City Centre,
DLF City Centre, Gurgaon. Set in the burgeoning Gurgaon precinct, DLF City Centre is a shopping and entertainment hub. Its architecture explores the realms of advertising visual imagery in building design. The facade of the structure acts as a billboard broadcasting the products and services that it houses. Although the merger of graphics and architecture is not new, here it is fashioned with forceful aplomb, to the extent that the aesthetic expression of the building is strongly anchored in the zany colours of the graphic illustrations. The structure facilitates parking over 450 cars in its upper, lower basement and lower ground. The lower ground floor, along with parking also has a supermarket and a small eatery for drivers. The ground and 1st floor features a host of national and international retail and F & B brands. The lifestyle store, which has a distinct identity on the exterior, occupies one end of the complex. A multiplex, covering 415 sq m, with 3 screens is set on the highest level and can seat up to 1,100 people. The multiplex lobby is a distinguished element in the elevation with its glass and metal detailing. The elliptical atrium forms the hub of the complex. A skylight shaped like a truncated cone defines the atrium and its clear structural manifestation adds to the visual feel of the light filled interior space. A prominent feature of the elevation design is the 11-storey high tower, which serves the significant role of communicating and attracting the outside spectator. The external manifestation of the building reflects the function of the spaces. The facade is divided into four segments-the lifestyle store, multiplex, the advertising tower and the retail segment. The use of distinct materials along with flashy graphics for each of these fragments proclaims a billboard jargon.

DLF- Galleria, Gurgaon

DLF- Galleria,
DLF Galleria, Gurgaon The design of DLF Galleria is evocative of a charming shopping hub in a quaint Mediterranean village. Its clay tile roof, archetypal fenestrations, pale pastel exterior hues, arched entranceway; retrained detailing and decorative grills adorning the terrace fashion the Mediterranean style. Galleria belongs to the genre of shopping centres that were pervasive before air-conditioned malls. The success of the development lies in it effective use of common spaces. The development, located in DLF Phase IV in Gurgaon, comprises a low-slung shopping arcade hitched to a high-rise office building. Galleria is defiantly distinctive amongst the concrete, steel and glass bevy of buildings designed in the DLF complex. It targets the small and middle segments of shop owners and businessmen rather than the usual multinational clientele. Appropriately, the complex has a rustic expression and creates a more approachable and friendly ambiance. The intention is clearly not to overwhelm but invite. The 2-storey high structure that accommodates the shopping arcade comprises four independent blocks connected by bridges surrounding a central courtyard. The shopping arcade facade also has adequate areas to display billboards. Its sloping red roofs with overhanging eaves overlook a piazza-like quadrangle with seating, greenery and a water body reminiscent of a Roman fountain. The ground and 1st floor house a non air-conditioned shopping mall while the 2nd floor space has been used to accommodate restaurants with open terraces. The ornamental wrought iron grills and the arched bridges add to the Mediterranean feel. A curved bridge links the shopping area to the 14-storey office building next to it. The highrise office complex is crowned with pitched roofs echoing the rustic appearance of the shopping mall. The design of the office block is also a definite deviation from the now standard open office plan demanded by larger businesses. Its design has customised floor plan to suit the smaller entrepreneur.
