Modernization of Airports- Mumbai and Delhi As part of Indian government’s initiative of modernising and restructuring airport infrastructure, the architect was commissioned to give a long overdue facelift and space addition to the Delhi and Mumbai airport terminals. Between them, Delhi and Mumbai account for a large quantum of the local air traffic but the facilities were rundown and undersized. One of the most demanding tasks in architecture is to give new form to what already exists. In this particular case, the objective was not only to renovate and expand existing buildings, but also creating a new image. The motivation for the projects was derived from the poetic seduction of aeroplanes with their aura of speed and dynamism. Appropriately, the architect endeavoured to give a forceful character to the form by using strong sinuous lines. The modern facades of the new terminal buildings are crafted with aluminium composite panels and glass. New Delhi Domestic Airport Terminal 1D (Arrival and Departure): The old terminal which was a bulky RCC structure was transformed into a sleek steel creation. The arrival terminal received a facelift while a new departure terminal was built. The new facilities have increased in scale to cater to ever-increasing airlines and passenger movement. The swanky departure terminal has a built up area of approximately 4,70,000 sq. ft covering the ground, mezzanine, first and second floors. These floors are dedicated to airline offices, baggage handling system, main departure concourse with drop off, ticketing counters, check-in and security hold and a retail area. A large food court welcomes passengers on the second floor along with a plush business lounge on the other side. It has 84 check in counters and a seating capacity of 2000 passengers at the security hold area. A new section measuring 71,355 sq. ft at a height of about 16 mt. was erected at the Arrival terminal and the building was extended on either side adding around 83,000 sq. ft to the structure. This was a great challenge owing to the brown field nature of the site. The distinguishing feature of the design is the wavy structural steel roof that covers the entire building. The bold structural engineering is evident in the columns with their massive flares that form the most powerful aesthetic feature in the interiors. The huge stretch of glass clad facade along the city and the hangar side, along with bands of skylights at roof junctions merit comfortable light filled interior spaces. The front and rear facades are marked by the symmetric composition of the column flares.
