Modernization of BITS, Pilani Set in a historic background, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, built in early 1900s is a centre for excellence and learning. The institute desired modernization in infrastructure and increase in the number of facilities which merged with its traditional architecture and did not seem out of context. With a plot area of almost 14,00,000 sq. m only 11% had built structures on it. While giving due importance to heritage, subtle contemporary architecture was finalized by the clients. The architect adopted the lineage sensitive approach where unused spaces were utilized and significance was given to developing a social interactive central spine. The open ground between the iconic clock tower and the temple was decided as the new development plot and the form was to emerge organically from earth. New interlocking spaces were created two storeys underground this central ground which made the ground floor a 24*7 recreational and academic activity area. This created a strong north south axis between the temple and the institution with the terrace garden overlooking the open spaces and the playground. The terrace will have large skylights at irregular intervals to provide natural sunlight in the basement as well as break the monotony at the ground level. The two storey sunken blocks will have lecture rooms with a capacity ranging from 500-40 students at a time, several labs and professor cabins and toilets. The entire design will be pedestrian friendly with cycling tracks created at the ground level. The decorative roundabout adds opulence and majesty to the entire institution.
